Training to become an optician

As an Optometrist San Diego you literally help other people to get a better view of things. Your everyday work as an optician mainly takes place in the sales room, in the workshop and in the office. The spectrum of tasks in the field of ophthalmic optics is wide and ranges from customer advice to the performance of eye tests, the anatomical and optical adjustment of spectacles, the grinding of lenses to the processing of administrative work in the office.

Did you already know?

The profession of ophthalmic optician is a profession with a bright future: there are still around 40 million spectacle wearers in Germany, and this number will not decline any time soon. The first contact lenses were developed in 1880 by Adolf Eugen Fick and August Müller. However, the uncomfortable glass bowls could not be worn for more than half an hour. On average, dogs see better than humans, although they cannot see the full colour spectrum as we humans can . It is impossible to sneeze with open eyes. The profession of the optician is fully your thing when…

You count precise work and sure instinct among your strengths.
You can get enthusiastic about fashion and are a small trend scout.
Wish you a daily customer contact.
You should rather not become an optician when…

You have problems approaching people openly.
You do not want to take the responsibility to contribute to the (eye) health of your customers.
Glasses are only fashion accessories for you.

Career and perspectives as an optician
Although the location of your training is usually limited to the optician’s shop, there are countless doors open to you after your training. With the further education to optometrist or a study of optometry you work in research & development, hand in hand with doctors and scientists. The promotion to master optician or state-certified optician allows you to open your own optician’s shop or to manage a branch of an existing company.
